Lucy rubbed her eyes and YAAAWWNED.
Mummy looked up to the clock on the wall.
“I think it’s bedtime.”

Sat in a snug lounge.

“It’s NOT bedtime” said Lucy “it’s a lion showing its teeth”

“I’m the king of the jungle!”

We’re taken to the wilds of Africa and Lucy
has turned into a lion.

“Well, let’s put on your pyjamas just in case.” Said mummy.
“They’re NOT pyjamas” said Lucy “they’re my astronaut suit”
WOOOSSHHHH, ZOOOOMMM, BEEP BEEP BEEP
“I’m off to explore!”

Each spread transforms into a make-believe world
with no sign of home or the usual surroundings.

“Now into the tub with you” said mummy.
“It’s NOT a tub” said Lucy “It’s a pirate ship…”

“and I’m the captain!”

“hmmm, it’s getting close to bedtime now” she said.
“Still NOT bedtime” said Lucy “A magic wand and I’m the magician”
ZAP ZIP ZAP, ABRACADABRA, HOOORAAYY
“Spots disappeared!”

In the bathroom Mummy helped Lucy brush her
teeth.
Spot is the family dog who joins them for the
bedtime routine on each page.

NOT his study” said Lucy “it’s his saloon and he’s the sheriff”

looks scary” said Lucy “I’m not sure I like this world”

they’ve got Spot!”

Spot the dog is being carried off by the Ogres

NOT spot” said mummy “that’s an Ogre-gobbling Goropogo”

“Now
quick, lets get out of here!”

This is the first spread that we see mummy
joining in with Lucy’s make-believe worlds.
Mummy comes to the rescue when Lucy is too
frightened to imagine something herself.

Safe in bed, Mummy smiled and tucked her in.
“After that adventure it must be bedtime now?” she asked.
“It’s NOT bedtime” yawned Lucy.
|
In Lucy’s bedroom but dotted around the room
are mementos of her make-believe adventures: A pirate hat, cowboy boots, a wanted
poster, stars, a big lion cuddly toy etc.
Spot is asleep on the floor.

“It’s dreamtime”

The page is filled with all the creatures
from her imagination and their having a tea party together.
Spot is there too.
